As the two horses trotted along side by side, China was so proud of the courage she’d shown by riding solo. Knowing she’d be terrified if the horses went any faster, Zaire set a pace that was quite suitable for her beginning-rider status.

Reaching down with her free hand, China gently stroked the small horse’s white mane. The caress only lasted a few seconds. Holding both reins tightly in her hand made her feel safer. Zaire had referred to Bluebonnet as a pony, saying the kids loved to ride her. The horse’s name fit her startling blue eyes—and it was the name of Texas’s state flower.

China wasn’t a kid but she felt like one, loving the gentle way the animal performed for her. The steady trotting and clop-clop sounds of the horseshoes hitting the ground was actually soothing. China felt tranquil.

Marveling at the majestic surroundings, she sighed with deep reverence. The dark sky was streaked with an array of pastel shades and a host of grayish clouds. The moon appeared to stand guard over the universe. Giant cacti appeared to take on lives of their own. A melodic chorus of nightfall sounds induced peace.

While peering over at China, Zaire was happy her eyes held no fear. Still, the rigid way she sat atop the horse made him wonder if she was angst ridden. He sidled Thunder closer to Bluebonnet. “How’re you feeling?”

“Exhilarated! I’m steadily making peace with Bluebonnet. She’s been superb.”

“Glad to hear it, China. As you get used to her you’ll relax even more.”
